예수님의 모습은 다른 복음서와는 사뭇 다르게 그려집니다. 손에 채찍을 들고 성전 안의 난전 상인들을 내쫓으시는 모습은 강렬합니다. 당시 성전 안에서는 제물로 바칠 짐승들을 거래하고 있었는데, 유다 왕국이 바벨론에 멸망한 후 많은 이스라엘 사람들이 외국에 거주하면서 멀리서 온 순례자들은 제물을 그곳에서 사고, 성전세를 내기 위해 환전해야 했습니다. 상인들과 기득권층은 이러한 상황을 이용하여 부당한 이득을 취하고 있었습니다. 더욱이 이 난전들이 성전의 이방인의 뜰에 만들어져 이방인들은 예배할 기회조차 박탈당했습니다.

예수님께서는 이러한 상황을 보시고 "내 집은 기도하는 집이라 일컬음을 받으리라 하였거늘 너희는 강도의 소굴을 만드는도다" (마태복음 21:13) 라고 말씀하시며 만민이 기도할 자리를 더럽혔다고 꾸짖으셨습니다. 예수님께서는 이제 특정한 장소가 아닌, 십자가를 통해 이루신 사역을 통해 어느 민족이든 하나님께 참된 예배를 드릴 수 있다고 선언하셨습니다.

그 당시 많은 사람들이 예수님의 말씀과 기적, 치유에 열광했지만, 예수님께서는 사람들에게 의탁하지 않으셨습니다. "예수는 그의 몸을 그들에게 의탁하지 아니하셨으니 이는 친히 모든 사람을 아심이요" (요한복음 2:24) 라는 말씀처럼, 예수님은 인간의 본성을 꿰뚫어 보셨습니다.

우리는 우리의 안락한 삶만을 바라고 있는지 스스로 돌아보아야 합니다. 우리 속의 위선과 탐욕을 채찍으로 쫓아내고, 예수님을 주인으로 모시며 그분과 교제하는 진정한 예배를 드리는 삶을 살아야 합니다. "하나님은 영이시니 예배하는 자가 영과 진리로 예배할지니라" (요한복음 4:24) 라는 말씀처럼, 우리의 마음과 삶 전체로 하나님을 예배하는 자가 되어야 합니다.

Today's early morning prayer service featured a sermon on the cleansing of the Temple by Jesus, starting from John 2:13. The pastor explained that John recorded this event at the beginning of his Gospel to emphasize that Jesus came as the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

The image of Jesus is portrayed quite differently from other Gospels. The scene of Him driving out the merchants from the Temple with a whip is intense. At that time, animals for sacrifice were being traded in the Temple. After the Kingdom of Judah was destroyed by Babylon, many Israelites lived abroad. Pilgrims from afar had to buy sacrifices there and exchange money to pay the Temple tax. Merchants and vested interests were taking unfair advantage of this situation. Moreover, these market stalls were set up in the Court of the Gentiles, depriving Gentiles of the opportunity to worship.

Seeing this, Jesus rebuked them, saying, "My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers" (Matthew 21:13), reprimanding them for defiling the place where all nations should pray. Jesus declared that now, through the work He accomplished on the cross, not in a specific place, any nation can offer true worship to God.

At that time, many people were enthusiastic about Jesus' words, miracles, and healings, but Jesus did not entrust Himself to people. As it says, "But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people" (John 2:24), Jesus saw through the nature of humanity.

We must reflect on whether we are only seeking our comfortable lives. We must drive out the hypocrisy and greed within us with a whip, serve Jesus as our Lord, and live a life of true worship in fellowship with Him. As it says, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24), we must become those who worship God
